Becoming (Part 2)
- Deborah Walker
- Saturday Sabbatical Notes
One of the most common things I hear when someone is in a season of becoming is, “I just feel a little off.”
Not lost.
Not broken.
Just… off.
I’ve come to see this feeling differently.
Feeling “off” often means your internal compass is recalibrating. Old reference points stop working. Familiar motivations lose their pull. What used to energize you doesn’t land the same way.
That can feel disorienting, especially in a world that rewards certainty and quick decisions.
But becoming is rarely clear while it’s happening.
We want language before the experience is complete.
We want direction before integration.
We want reassurance that we’re doing it right.
Yet most real shifts happen before we can name them.
Becoming asks for tolerance of ambiguity. For staying present when clarity hasn’t arrived yet.
Every single time I begin to step into something new I experience this.
This is where many people try to override the process. They fill the space with busyness. With plans. With noise. Anything to avoid sitting in the in-between, or as I love to call it - the open space.
But the open space is where the information lives. And it becomes available to us if we sit in availability with non-attachment.
If you’re feeling slightly unsettled right now, I invite you to pause before labeling it as a problem.
Ask instead:
What might be rearranging?
What if this isn’t a lack of direction, but a quiet reorientation?
The Becoming journal was designed for exactly this space. Each reflection slows the moment down just enough to help you notice what’s shifting without trying to force meaning too soon.
You don’t have to work through it in order.
You don’t have to finish it quickly.
You don’t even have to know what you’re becoming yet.
Sometimes the most honest work is simply staying present long enough to let something take shape.
Becoming isn’t a destination.
It’s a relationship you’re already in.
By the way… the Becoming Journal Booklet is the first in a series of six and is available tomorrow. Go to deborahgwalker.com for more information.
May your strength always be infused with serenity and remember….
